Nigeria’s maritime regulator has launched a new digital platform to strengthen oversight, block revenue leakages, and enforce environmental regulations across its shipping sector.
The Maritime Enhanced Monitoring System (MEMS), introduced by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), provides real-time vessel tracking, automated billing, and digital logging of maritime services, replacing legacy manual systems prone to exploitation.
“MEMS allows us to trace, log, and invoice every maritime transaction—from waste reception to vessel movement—with digital precision. This is not a concession but a necessary reform said Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA.
The launch follows unfounded media reports alleging a concession of NIMASA operations – claims the agency has firmly denied. Maritime stakeholders have confirmed the initiative is a self-driven modernization effort aimed at restoring transparency and strengthening compliance in the Nigerian Maritime Industry.
The system supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and aligns with the policy direction of Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola, who has championed institutional digitization and accountability across the sector.
Following the Deep Blue Project which is now widely credited with making Nigeria’s coasts one of the safest in Africa, MEMS is expected to further reinforce Nigeria’s maritime regulatory credibility and investor confidence in the Gulf of Guinea.
