Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday received the Torch of Unity in anticipation of the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games 2024.
The symbolic torch was presented to the governor at the City Gate along the Abeokuta–Siun–Sagamu Expressway by Dorcas Adesokan, a renowned athlete and double gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games.
The Torch of Unity, which has been touring the country since it was handed over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the President of the National Sports Commission, signifies more than the commencement of a sporting event.
According to Governor Abiodun, it represents Nigeria’s shared aspirations for unity, youth empowerment, and the celebration of diversity.
“For us in Ogun State, the Torch of Unity embodies the mission of the Gateway Games: a celebration of our sporting heritage, peaceful coexistence, and the resilient Nigerian spirit,” Governor Abiodun stated.
He emphasized that the event is a call to uphold the values of friendship, collaboration, and mutual respect, which have been the foundation of the National Sports Festival since its inception in 1973.
Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun State is hosting the National Sports Festival for the second time, reaffirming the state’s commitment to national unity, youth development, and cultural pride.
“As the games begin this Friday, we hope this Torch continues to inspire love, pride, and unity among our young people and the entire nation,” the governor added.
The 22nd National Sports Festival is expected to bring together athletes from across Nigeria, showcasing Ogun State’s hospitality, rich traditions, and sporting talents.
