In a continued effort to find sustainable solutions to noise pollution—particularly from religious centres and the entertainment industry—the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) on Monday hosted the 10th Annual Noiseless Lagos Campaign.
The event, held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, was themed “Curbing Noise Pollution in a Mega City” and focused on developing strategic, long-term solutions to the growing problem of noise pollution, especially from places of worship.
Addressing participants, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the urgent need for collective action. Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Matters, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, he stressed the serious public health implications of unchecked noise.
“We must recognize that noise is not just a nuisance; it is a public health concern,” Wahab stated. “From hearing loss to cardiovascular diseases and mental health disorders, the consequences of noise pollution are far-reaching.”
In his opening remarks, LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, reiterated the agency’s commitment to reducing noise across Lagos while acknowledging the sensitive nature of religious activities in the state.
Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters (Christian), Very Rev. Bukola Adeleke, commended LASEPA’s decade-long advocacy against noise pollution. He applauded initiatives such as wellness campaigns and free annual health screenings, describing them as global-standard efforts to promote a healthier urban environment.
Similarly, the Special Adviser on Islamic Matters, Hon. Ahmad Abdullahi Jebe, acknowledged the challenges posed by noise in both religious and commercial spaces. “Noise pollution is a significant concern, especially in marketplaces and religious settings across Africa,” he noted.
