Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning at the bustling Isheri Market near the OPIC bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into the market, leaving one person dead, several injured, and multiple stalls and properties destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck, which was coming from Lagos, lost control as it approached the OPIC area.
A motorcyclist who witnessed the incident said, “There was no traffic. The truck tried to enter the estate but had no brakes. It veered off and rammed into the market, killing someone.”
Reports indicate that the truck driver, in an attempt to avoid crashing into the estate gate, swerved sharply to the right but instead plowed into the roadside market. The lone fatality was identified as a local tea vendor who was serving customers at the time of the crash.
“I had just called him to serve me tea,” recounted a night security guard who sustained injuries in the incident. “I took one sip, then heard a loud noise. I stood up and the truck hit me. It’s by God’s grace I fell to the side. The man who served me died instantly.”
The exact number of injured persons remains unconfirmed as emergency responders continue to assess the situation. However, several individuals were reported to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Bystanders observed that two parked vehicles—a van and a Toyota Sienna—helped absorb part of the impact, potentially preventing further casualties.
Officers from the Isheri Tactical Unit have since arrested the truck driver. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, while cleanup and recovery efforts continue at the scene.
