The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a lone vehicular crash involving a fully occupied commercial bus (registration number KTU 69 YJ), which occurred over the weekend along the Alausa corridor of Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, heavily impaired by alcohol, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a streetlight pole with forceful impact.
The collision triggered panic in the area and left several passengers injured, including a couple seated in the middle row.
Swift response by LASTMA officials stationed nearby ensured the timely rescue of four critically injured passengers—two males and two females, including the couple—who were promptly given emergency medical attention at the scene. They were later handed over to personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and transported to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for further treatment.
Thankfully, the remaining passengers escaped with minor or no injuries.
During the rescue operation, officers from the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police Force secured the scene to protect emergency responders and preserve evidence.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the driver’s reckless conduct, describing it as a grave threat to public safety. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to curbing drunk driving through continuous advocacy and active surveillance.
“Our Monitoring and Surveillance Unit is fully engaged in motor parks across the state, reinforcing our campaign message: ‘Don’t Drink and Drive,’” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.
He also extended sympathies to the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery.
