At least four people are in critical condition and 27 others injured after a car drove into a crowd during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade on Monday evening.
The incident occurred shortly after the players’ open-top bus had passed through a densely packed area in the city’s northwest.
According to eyewitnesses, a dark-coloured vehicle swerved through the massive gathering, striking several people celebrating the club’s record-equalling 20th English league title.
Liverpool City Region Mayor described the condition of four victims as “very, very ill in hospital.” Emergency services confirmed during a late-night press conference that a total of 27 people were taken to hospital, including four children.
Police have arrested a 53-year-old white British man, believed to be the driver of the vehicle.
Authorities stated that they are not treating the incident as terrorism-related at this time.
The celebration had drawn hundreds of thousands of supporters, turning what was a day of jubilation into one of shock and concern. Investigations are ongoing.
