Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) officials have successfully apprehended and prosecuted a man for vandalizing government infrastructure at Peace Park in Ojota area of Lagos.
Mr. Freedom Sunday Akabuchi was caught red-handed by LASPARK officials while in the act of cutting the wire mesh pole within the popular recreational area.
Following his arrest, Akabuchi was promptly arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Bolade.
He faced a three-count charge, including conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, wilful damage to government property, and theft of government property.
During the court proceedings, Mr. Akabuchi pleaded guilty to the charges of theft and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. Consequently, the court delivered a sentence of six months imprisonment.
However, the legal process is not yet fully concluded. A separate trial regarding the charge of wilful damage to government property has been scheduled to commence after Mr. Akabuchi completes his current six-month jail term.
In the wake of this incident, Lagos government has strongly emphasized the crucial need for all citizens to protect and preserve public infrastructure. Government properties are assets belonging to the entire community and should not be subjected to individual acts of vandalism or exploitation, said Lagos government.
