LASTMA Launches Clean-Up Campaign to Restore Traffic Order in Lagos |LAGOS EYE NEWS

In a bold move to restore order and discipline on Lagos roads, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched a comprehensive clean-up and enforcement operation targeting major traffic corridors across the metropolis.

The campaign, which commenced on Thursday under the directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, is spearheaded by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

The operation began with full-scale deployment in traffic hotspots including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi—areas notorious for gridlock, illegal parking, and environmental violations.

As part of the enforcement exercise, a total of 235 vehicles were impounded for contraventions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. The breakdown includes 156 commercial buses (Danfo), 38 private cars, 19 minibuses and tricycles, 5 haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state passenger buses. Offences ranged from obstruction of traffic flow and illegal terminal operations to encroachment on pedestrian walkways and flagrant violation of traffic regulations.

In a particularly serious incident, five articulated trucks were intercepted on the Adeniji Adele Bridge while offloading livestock—including cows and rams—alongside abattoir waste.

Authorities condemned the act as a threat to public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge. The drivers are set to face immediate prosecution.

Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized the agency’s zero-tolerance stance going forward, stating:

“All impounded vehicles will be prosecuted at the Lagos State Mobile Court. This campaign is not targeted at any specific group but is a necessary correction to longstanding traffic indiscipline. We urge all road users to join us in building a more orderly and livable Lagos.”

He further warned that any vehicle found engaging in illegal parking, blocking traffic, or violating one-way rules would be summarily impounded. LASTMA, he noted, will be leveraging legal, operational, and digital tools to ensure compliance across the state’s road network.

The enforcement operation, part of the Lagos State Government’s wider urban regeneration drive, will cover all five administrative divisions—Lagos Island, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Badagry, and Epe. The initiative aims to reclaim public roadways, improve quality of life, and foster a sustainable culture of traffic discipline and environmental responsibility.

LASTMA also encouraged members of the public, especially motorists, to report traffic violations or misconduct by agency officials via its toll-free hotline: 080000527862. The Authority assured that all reports would be addressed promptly and appropriately.
