The National Assembly will hold a Special Joint Sitting on Thursday, June 12, 2025, to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expected to deliver a keynote address during the event.
According to an internal memorandum issued by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the session will take place at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex. Proceedings are set to begin at 11:00 a.m., ahead of the President’s scheduled arrival at noon.
This year’s Democracy Day is themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” President Tinubu, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, is expected to deliver a Presidential Address to the Joint Sitting of both chambers.
The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, alongside the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by the President.
Speaking ahead of the event, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr. described the Joint Sitting as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history. He highlighted the role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic principles, promoting accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil governance.
The House of Representatives also urged citizens to mark Democracy Day as a time for national reflection, patriotic renewal, and a collective recommitment to building an inclusive, prosperous, and united Nigeria.
