The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has successfully enrolled 59,786 inmates across correctional facilities in Nigeria, issuing them with National Identification Numbers (NINs) in a move to promote inclusivity within the national identity database.
This is contained in a statement through Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate Communications Unit
According to the statement, the initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to ensure that all Nigerians and legal residents are captured in the National Identity System.
According to the Commission, 74 percent of the inmate population has so far been enrolled, with efforts ongoing to complete the exercise nationwide.
NIMC expressed appreciation for the continued support of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Comptroller-General of NCoS, Mr. Nwakuche Ndidi; and the management and staff of the Correctional Service.
In a further push toward universal identity coverage, the Commission announced that it will commence ward-level enrollment across the country—another key element of President Tinubu’s agenda to strengthen national data systems and promote inclusive governance.
NIMC’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with strategic partners to ensure every Nigerian and legal resident is enrolled and issued a NIN, regardless of location or status.
