Police in downtown Los Angeles began making arrests Tuesday night as protesters defied an overnight curfew following a fifth consecutive day of demonstrations against former President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
The protests, largely peaceful during daylight hours, have been marred by sporadic looting and vandalism, casting a shadow over the movement against intensified immigration enforcement actions.
The demonstrations, which began on June 6, escalated after isolated incidents of violence prompted Trump to deploy federal troops—an extraordinary move made despite opposition from the California state governor.
Tensions flared again after nightfall on Tuesday. However, about an hour into the city-imposed curfew, only a handful of demonstrators remained in the downtown area. Police issued warnings and proceeded to make several arrests as they cleared the streets.
