President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address the nation at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, as part of activities marking the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations, Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day.
The statement also confirmed that the President will attend a joint session of the National Assembly at noon, scheduled to hold at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The committee further announced that there will be no ceremonial parade this year. However, a public lecture will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
The lecture, themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” will be part of the day’s official programme.
This year marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria, following the country’s transition from military rule in 1999. Originally observed on May 29—the traditional date of presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations—Democracy Day was officially moved to June 12 in 2018 to honour the annulled 1993 presidential election, believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola. The election is widely regarded as Nigeria’s most credible vote.
The 2025 celebration marks President Tinubu’s third Democracy Day in office, following his inauguration in 2023 after a closely contested election. Despite over two decades of democratic governance, concerns remain over the depth and resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and values.
