Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made to secure the nation’s democracy and renew their commitment to upholding democratic ideals.
In a heartfelt Democracy Day message on June 12 to the people of Kaduna and the nation at large, the governor, a former pro-democracy activist, paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly those who championed the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election. He described the date as a “defining moment in our collective struggle for democracy.”
“June 12 holds a special place in our national history,” Governor Sani said. “Nigerians set aside differences to vote overwhelmingly for Chief MKO Abiola in an election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in our history. Its annulment was a dark chapter, but it galvanized the push for the democracy we enjoy today.”
While acknowledging the progress made since the return to democratic rule in 1999, the governor emphasized the ongoing challenges of insecurity and economic hardship. He urged citizens to remain resilient and united in confronting these issues.
Highlighting the strides made in Kaduna State, Governor Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance. “Our work is anchored on transparency and accountability,” he stated. “We are bridging the gap between rural and urban communities, and making progress in economic development, education, and healthcare.”
The governor also stressed that democracy is a continuous journey that requires active citizen participation and vigilance. He urged residents to remain engaged in shaping a fairer and more equitable society.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to democratic values,” he concluded. “Together, we can build a society that offers a better life for all.”
