The British High Commission in Malawi on Thursday, marked the birthday of His Majesty King Charles III.
The event brought together government officials, diplomats, and other stakeholders to strengthen ties between the two nations.
Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, praised the long-standing relationship between Malawi and the UK, describing it as fruitful.
“We want to use this moment to appreciate the people of the United Kingdom and the King for the wonderful relationship that we have and the support mostly that we have received,” Wirima said.
The High Commissioner to Malawi Fiona Ritchie, expressed concern over growing challenges related to election violence and emphasised the importance of peaceful elections.
The High Commissioner also noted the potential for economic growth in Malawi, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and mining.
“Malawi is currently and will remain for some time an agriculturally dominant economy. So in order for Malawi to grow, it does need to invest in more productive commercial agriculture,” she said.
The reception underscored the strong diplomatic relations between Malawi and the UK, which have been built over a century.
The UK has been a major development partner, providing significant support in areas such as health, education, and climate change.
