Captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, paid a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu today at the State House.
During the meeting, the two discussed the transformative power of sports, the future of Nigerian football, and Troost-Ekong’s commitment to national development through sport. The football star expressed his determination to lead Nigeria to victory at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Troost-Ekong for his leadership both on and off the pitch and reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to sports as a vital tool for youth empowerment, community engagement, and economic opportunity.
“In Lagos, sports is more than just a game,” the governor said. “It is a catalyst for development. We are investing in infrastructure, supporting grassroots talent, and partnering with visionary athletes like Troost-Ekong to shape a brighter future for Nigerian sports.”
Troost-Ekong also shared his long-term goals, which include mentoring young athletes, contributing to community-building efforts, and expanding access to sports opportunities.
Both leaders expressed a shared vision for leveraging sports as a force for positive change.
Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged continued support for initiatives that align with this vision, stating, “Lagos stands with you. Let’s build the future of Nigerian sports together.”
