As the world marks International Widows Day 2025 with the theme “Empower Her: From Loss to Leadership,” a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Prince Nureni Akinsanya, has called on Nigerians to show greater commitment to supporting widows in their communities through donations and empowerment initiatives.
In a statement issued by his media office on Monday, Hon. Akinsanya emphasized the importance of collective efforts to uplift widows and their children, urging well-meaning individuals to provide support in any form to help give their lives meaning.
The lawmaker representing Mushin Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly said widows should not be seen merely as victims of circumstance, but as potential agents of positive change if properly empowered.
“It is part of my mandate to support widows and the less privileged, and I have remained consistent in doing so,” Akinsanya stated. “Since I became a legislator, I have implemented numerous empowerment and support programs specifically targeted at widows.”

He highlighted on recent initiatives, including scholarship awards to children of widows, as well as the regular distribution of cash and food supplies.
He also recalled that during the last Sallah festival, several widows in his constituency received palliatives such as food items, meat, and financial support to help them celebrate with their families.
“While we have done a lot, it is still not enough. We need more residents and private organizations to join our efforts in alleviating the burdens faced by widows,” he appealed.
Hon. Akinsanya further stressed the potential of widows and their children to become change agents in society—provided they receive adequate support from both the government and the public.
