Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has delivered a scathing critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, declaring that it has “failed woefully” just two years into its tenure.
He made this assertion during a televised interview on Monday.
El-Rufai, a prominent former political figure and member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), criticized the government’s handling of security, infrastructure, and economic management.
He claimed that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s record—particularly on security—was significantly better.
“The country’s governance architecture has failed. There are no clear trade, industrial, or investment policies. Everything is going wrong,” El-Rufai said.
He expressed concern over the federal government’s revenue management, alleging a lack of transparency and tangible outcomes.
“They are generating significant revenue, but we don’t know where it’s going. There are no visible results. They claim a large portion of the money is being allocated to the states,” he said.

While acknowledging the important role of states in development, El-Rufai emphasized that critical infrastructure—such as electricity, rail, aviation, and telecommunications—remains under federal control.
“Yes, states are receiving more money in Naira terms, but my question is: where are the results?” he asked.
Referring to President Tinubu’s recent visit to Kaduna to commission projects, El-Rufai asserted that those projects were initiated during his own administration.
“The President went to Kaduna to commission projects—projects I initiated and brought to over 90% completion. No new projects have been initiated or completed in two years, despite significantly increased resources,” he said.
He also criticized what he described as weak federal oversight, alleging that the President is more focused on political consolidation than on governance.
“Federal oversight is weak because the President is focused on keeping all APC governors in line,” El-Rufai claimed.
Addressing Nigeria’s worsening security situation, he accused the federal government of failing to deliver results despite substantial security expenditures.
“For the past 12 to 18 months, ₦100 billion has been deducted monthly from the federation account and allocated to security agencies. Yet, there’s been no improvement,” he lamented.
Citing official data, El-Rufai stated that in 2024 alone, over 2.2 million Nigerians were abducted and 615,000 killed—figures he described as worse than those recorded during Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
He also questioned the legality of the security-related deductions.
“That ₦100 billion monthly deduction—₦1.5 trillion so far—has been taken without appropriation by the National Assembly or the consent of state assemblies. The entire process is unconstitutional. It is an impeachable offense,” he declared.
On whether it is fair to judge the Tinubu administration after just two years, El-Rufai argued that Tinubu himself had previously assessed others much earlier in their terms.
“When Jonathan was President, Senator Tinubu used to tweet that, as far as security is concerned, ‘the buck stops at the President’s desk.’ Now that he is President, he must take responsibility,” he said.
Regarding his own political future, El-Rufai confirmed that while he is consulting, he has not made a definitive decision about contesting any position.
“For me, priority number one is finding a leader who can improve the quality of governance in Nigeria. I don’t need politics to thrive. But we need a well-run country where people can reach their full potential,” he stated.
He concluded with a warning that the 2027 elections are far from decided.
“Tinubu’s strategy is to create the impression that 2027 is already won through defections and propaganda. It is not. I’ve reviewed the numbers and trends—Tinubu has no pathway to victory. In fact, he’d be lucky to come third,” El-Rufai asserted.
