U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Israel against launching retaliatory strikes on Iran, amid ongoing efforts to uphold a newly brokered ceasefire between the two nations.
The warning was posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform on Tuesday morning, in which he urged Israeli leaders to stand down from military action. “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!” the president wrote in all caps.
The statement follows Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, which reportedly took effect earlier in the day. While Israel confirmed its agreement to the truce proposal, Iranian officials stated they would cease hostilities if Israel reciprocated.
Shortly after the ceasefire took effect, Israel’s military claimed it had intercepted a missile launched from Iranian territory. However, Tehran denied initiating any fresh attacks.
Speaking to reporters before departing for the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump criticized both countries for actions taken after the ceasefire agreement was announced.
“There was one rocket that I guess was fired overboard after the time limit, and now Israel is going out. These guys have got to calm down,” he said.
The president expressed frustration with Israel’s immediate military response following the agreement. “I didn’t like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal. They didn’t have to unload,” he stated.
Trump also commented more broadly on the decades-long conflict between the two nations. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the hell they’re doing,” he remarked.
He confirmed that both Iran and Israel had, to some extent, violated the truce, though he added, “I’m not sure they did it intentionally.”
“I don’t like the fact that Israel went out this morning at all. And I’m going to see if I can stop it,” he said.
Addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Trump declared, “Iran will never rebuild its nuclear [program],” while also noting he was “not happy with Iran either.”
