The Lagos State Government has officially denied allegations made by former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, regarding the demolition of a property reportedly belonging to his brother.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the state government described Obi’s claims as “baseless” and “factually incorrect,” asserting that neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other state agency was responsible for the said demolition.
Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, under whose purview LASBCA operates, also confirmed that the agency did not carry out any demolition at the location in question.
“It is disturbing that Mr. Obi would make such a serious allegation without first verifying the facts,” the statement read.
“The Lagos State Government remains committed to the rule of law and the safety and security of all residents. We will not tolerate lawlessness or violations of existing regulations.”
In response to the controversy, the government has directed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, to initiate a full investigation through LASBCA to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident and take appropriate action if necessary.
The statement urged the public to disregard Mr. Obi’s claims, emphasizing the state’s dedication to maintaining peace, law, and order. It also reiterated that Lagos remains a welcoming environment for all Nigerians.
“We will not be distracted by unsubstantiated allegations or any attempt to discredit the work we are doing,” the statement concluded.
