The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on self-recognizance.
Akpoti-Uduaghan is standing trial on a six-count charge bordering on cybercrime and alleged inciting comments made against president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi state Governor, Yahaya Bello
GalaxyTelevision reports that the charges, filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, relate to public statements made on April 1st and 3rd, 2025, during events in Kogi State and in televised interviews Prosecutors alleged that the Senator claimed Akpabio told Yahaya Bello to ensure she is not killed in Abuja, but in Kogi State, to make it appear as if it was carried out by the people.
Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared before the court and pleaded not guilty to the six counts under the Cybercrime Act.n Counsel to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and senior advocate of Nigeria, Roland Otaru, filed a motion for bail dated June 20, urging the court to release the senator on self-recognizance.
He argued that she is a legal practitioner, a serving senator, and not a flight risk, saying that she is already enjoying bail in another matter before the FCT High Court.
The prosecution did not oppose the bail application, and the court ruled in her favour.
Justice Muhammed Umar acknowledged her status as a serving senator and granted her bail on self-recognizance. The matter has been adjourned to September 22, 2025, for further hearing.
