Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made fresh corruption allegations against former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and his wife, Judith Amaechi, claiming that she received ₦4 billion monthly for a year from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the guise of mobilizing women in the Niger Delta region.
Wike, speaking during a heated media chat, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize the public release of the long-awaited forensic audit report of the NDDC. He said he was willing to resign from his current post as FCT Minister if the claims he made are not reflected in the audit.
“Amaechi’s wife collected ₦4 billion every month for 12 months from the NDDC to mobilize Niger Delta women. I call on President Tinubu to release the forensic audit report. If that payment is not in the audit, I will resign as FCT Minister—immediately,” Wike declared.
Emphasizing transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, Wike maintained that Nigerians deserve to know the truth about how funds meant for development in the Niger Delta were spent.
The former Rivers State Governor also took aim at Amaechi directly, accusing him of accepting a Rolls-Royce from Senator John Mbata, the chairman of MC Simon Consortium—an entity allegedly responsible for over 60% of key contracts in Rivers State at the time.
“Everyone knew that Senator Mbata was handling 60% of the state’s central contracts. They said he gave Amaechi a Rolls-Royce. Meanwhile, the public transport vehicles that were meant to be supplied under those contracts never arrived. That’s a crime,” Wike said.
Wike didn’t stop at corruption allegations. He further questioned Amaechi’s educational background, casting doubt on whether he ever graduated from Rivers State University or genuinely earned a degree from Baze University.
“He says he went to Rivers State University, but he didn’t pass. He later claimed Baze University. Well, before anyone questions my education, let it be known that I’m an alumnus of Rivers South, Port Harcourt, and I hold multiple degrees,” Wike said.
In response to criticisms surrounding his wealth, Wike defended himself by highlighting his upbringing and family background. He insisted that his success was not built on political patronage or shady contracts.
“I own a Rolls-Royce. So what? I bought it. No one gave it to me. I came from a comfortable background. My father was a general manager in many companies. I was in business before I joined politics,” he explained.
Responding to claims that he owns properties across the country, Wike argued that owning property should not be seen as a sign of corruption, especially when acquired legitimately.
“They say I have houses everywhere. Yes, I do. But not one was gifted to me by a contractor. Amaechi was Speaker for eight years, Governor for another eight, and Minister for eight more—yet he claims he owns nothing? That’s a spiritual problem,” he said pointedly.
The FCT Minister criticized what he described as hypocritical behavior from political elites who publicly distance themselves from wealth but allegedly benefit from state resources behind closed doors.
“These are the people deceiving Nigerians every day. They pretend not to like money, but they use it. And you need money to solve problems,” he added.
Wike also claimed there are ongoing efforts to seize or demolish government buildings where he resides, which he linked to political vendettas.
“They want to destroy homes and take government buildings—this is how far they’re willing to go. I’m not saying destroy them, I’m saying look at who we’re dealing with,” Wike said.
