Lagos Assembly Receives Protesters Demanding Immediate Implementation of LG Law

By Olusola Ade / Lagos

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday received members of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), who staged a peaceful protest at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, calling for the immediate implementation of the Lagos State Local Government Administrative Law.

Led by CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, the protesters submitted a formal petition to the Assembly, expressing concerns over the delayed enforcement of the law, which was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on May 7, 2025.

Although a recent Executive Order by the Governor slated the law’s implementation for August 4, 2025, CHSR condemned the delay, describing it as unconstitutional and politically motivated.

Comrade Omotehinse argued that once a bill is signed into law, it becomes effective immediately unless a commencement date is explicitly stated within the legislation. He maintained that the delay undermines legislative authority, democratic norms, and the rule of law.

The group, in its petition, urged the Assembly to resist any form of executive interference and ensure the law takes effect without further delay. CHSR also recommended postponing the Local Government elections scheduled for July 12, 2025, should the law remain unenforced by then.

Furthermore, the rights group advocated for the constitution of caretaker committees to oversee administration in the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas following the expiration of the current chairmen’s tenures.

Responding on behalf of the Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency I, acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured the group that the House would address the concerns appropriately.

“The House has received your memorandum and will look into the issues raised. Be assured that due legislative attention will be given,” Hon. Tobun stated.

The protest concluded peacefully, with CHSR reaffirming its commitment to the protection of democratic values and transparency in local governance.
