The Lagos State Government has attributed the flash flooding currently affecting parts of the state to a natural tidal occurrence known as “lock up.”
According to the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the flooding results from elevated tidal levels in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagos Lagoon.
In an official statement, the government explained that the high tide temporarily hinders stormwater from draining into the sea, causing rainwater to back up and inundate low-lying areas of the city.
However, authorities assure residents that the situation is temporary and that floodwaters are expected to recede naturally within one to two hours after rainfall stops.
“We urge all residents to remain calm and not to panic,” Wahab said, adding that emergency response teams and drainage maintenance personnel are actively monitoring and managing the situation.
The Commissioner also issued a strong reminder about responsible waste disposal, emphasizing that dumping refuse into drains and gutters worsens flooding by obstructing water flow.
“Proper waste disposal is a civic duty we must all embrace to ensure a flood-resilient Lagos,” he stated.
The government called on residents to support ongoing efforts toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.
