The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed off the Monterosa Construction site in the wake of a tragic crane accident that claimed the life of a crane operator.
The incident, which occurred during crane operations at the site, prompted an immediate response from officials of the Commission.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the operator, identified as Mr. Rotimi Adesina, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase 1, where he was later confirmed dead.
The site’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer was said to be attending to the injured operator at the time of the accident and was unavailable for immediate questioning by authorities.
During the initial inquiry, Project Manager Mr. Hein Coerzer and Company Secretary Mr. Ndidi Uchechukwu were engaged by Safety Commission officials to provide information and documentation related to the crane.
The officials were informed that all necessary documents are stored at the company’s head office. The Commission has since directed the company to submit all relevant documentation concerning the crane and overall site operations for a comprehensive review.
In a swift regulatory action, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, ordered the immediate sealing of the site and the issuance of an abatement notice to eliminate any further risk and protect the lives of all personnel on site.
Mr. Mojola emphasized the paramount importance of safety, stressing that under no circumstances should precautionary measures be compromised. He added that the Commission would continue to update the public as the investigation progresses.
The Director-General also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s commitment to preventing similar incidents through rigorous enforcement of safety regulations across the state.
