Members of the Agbekoya Society of Nigeria rescued a young man from an attempted suicide on Wednesday evening along the Third Mainland Bridge, near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront.
The life-saving intervention occurred as the Agbekoya delegation, led by its President General, Aare Kamorudeen Okikiola, was returning from a courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Adegoke Fayoade, at Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos.
The visit formed part of the Society’s ongoing initiative to bolster community policing and enhance security collaboration across Yorubaland.
According to eyewitnesses, the Agbekoya convoy was en route to the mainland when members noticed suspicious activity near the bridge’s edge. Acting swiftly, Aare Okikiola ordered an emergency stop. Members of the convoy rushed to the scene and managed to physically restrain the man, who was moments away from leaping into the lagoon.
“We were just returning from a fruitful meeting with the AIG when we saw him. God used us today,” Aare Kamorudeen said, visibly emotional. “This is exactly what our mission is about protecting lives, restoring hope, and partnering with the police for a safer society.”
The individual, believed to be in his early thirties, was later handed over to personnel from the Bariga Police Division’s Berger Pin-down response unit.
He has since been taken for medical and psychological evaluation.
The Agbekoya Society’s prompt intervention has drawn widespread commendation on social media and from civil society groups. Many praised the cultural group’s timely response and highlighted the importance of synergy between traditional institutions and formal security agencies.
Earlier in the day, the Agbekoya team had met with AIG Fayoade to discuss critical issues, including farm security, grassroots intelligence, and efforts to curb criminal elements impersonating members of the Society.
