Public schools and government offices across Ogun State have been shut down as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Council, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), declared an indefinite strike effective from 12:00 midnight on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The industrial action, announced in a joint statement issued to members by NUT Chairman, Comrade Sewakanu Noah, and NLC Secretary, Comrade Chris Omuneh, stems from a series of unresolved labour issues, including unpaid deductions, unfulfilled agreements, and what the unions described as “the government’s continued insensitivity to workers’ welfare,” particularly in the education sector.
According to the statement, the key demands outlined by the unions include Immediate stoppage of the Contributory Pension Scheme; Payment of a new minimum wage separate from the previously granted wage award; Settlement of outstanding leave allowances spanning eight years; Full implementation of previously approved but staggered 2023 and 2024 promotions; and Consequential adjustment of the minimum pension rate.
The NUT, in a communiqué addressed to teachers across the state, reaffirmed its loyalty to the NLC and urged all primary and secondary school teachers to comply by withdrawing their services starting today.
“Having exhausted all avenues for peaceful resolution, particularly on matters concerning pensions and long-standing labour issues, the union has no choice but to act in the interest of its members,” the statement read. “We urge all teachers to remain at home and not to entertain any fear, as this action is lawful and aimed at asserting our rights.”
While assuring members of continued communication as developments unfold, the union leadership expressed gratitude for their usual cooperation and reiterated its commitment to securing a just and fair future for all workers in the state.
