IGP Egbetokun Meets Retired Police Officers After Protest Over Pension and Welfare Issues |LAGOS EYE NEWS

….Promises to address Welfare Concerns

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday held a closed-door meeting with a group of retired police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, following a peaceful protest earlier in the day.

The retirees had taken to the streets to demand improved welfare, payment of outstanding entitlements, and fairer treatment from the authorities.

Their demonstration highlighted long-standing grievances regarding the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and what they described as systemic neglect by the police leadership.

In response, IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to addressing the welfare concerns of retired personnel, particularly those affected under the CPS.

Speaking after the meeting, the IGP expressed empathy with the retirees, acknowledging that current officers also share concerns about their future post-retirement.

He disclosed that discussions were ongoing at the highest levels, including a recent engagement with the National Security Adviser, aimed at improving the welfare of retired officers.

While backing the calls to exit the CPS, Egbetokun clarified that the decision lies beyond his authority and has remained unresolved for over a decade. Nonetheless, he noted that reforms within the scheme are still achievable to improve outcomes for retirees.

The IGP also cautioned the retired officers against being influenced by external elements with hidden agendas, urging them to remain committed to constructive dialogue and collaborative efforts toward lasting solutions.
