The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested suspects linked to the abduction of a judge of the Bayelsa State High Court, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro.
Justice Omukoro was kidnapped on June 21 in Yenagoa and held captive for 12 days before he was rescued through the coordinated efforts of security agencies in the state.
Governor Douye Diri announced the breakthrough on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Yenagoa.
The governor also used the occasion to honour Superintendent of Police (SP) Sentome Obi, who reportedly rejected a $17,000 bribe from a suspect involved in an organ harvesting case.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri revealed that all members of the kidnap gang had been apprehended by the police, except for the gang leader who remains at large.
“Bayelsa State has zero tolerance for crime and criminality,” Diri declared. “We have greatly improved our crime-fighting capabilities using technology. In the recent kidnap of a serving judge in the state, we were able to secure his release unhurt through a coordinated security operation.”
The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to public safety, citing the deployment of drones and the installation of CCTV cameras across parts of Yenagoa to enhance surveillance and crime prevention.
Diri lauded the efforts of the state’s security agencies and commended SP Obi for his exemplary integrity, describing him as a model police officer who brought pride to both the Nigeria Police Force and Bayelsa State.
“As a government, we are proud of SP Obi. He not only rejected a bribe but upheld the highest standards of professional ethics. He has proven that a good name is better than riches,” the governor said.
In recognition of his gallantry and integrity, Governor Diri announced a reward of a three-bedroom apartment and a car for SP Obi, while also recommending him to the Inspector General of Police for promotion.
The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, who was present at the event, congratulated the officer and commended the state government for recognizing outstanding service. He also reiterated the need for continued investment in security to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.
