The Lagos State Government has called on the Medical Guild to reconsider its planned three-day warning strike scheduled to begin on Monday, July 28, 2025, urging the doctors’ union to allow ongoing dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution.
The strike was declared following allegations of unilateral salary deductions and other grievances, which the Medical Guild outlined during a press conference held on Saturday, July 26.
In an official statement released by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the government acknowledged the concerns raised by the Guild and assured the public that the matter is being treated with “utmost sincerity and urgency.”
The Ministry confirmed that negotiations with the Medical Guild are ongoing and expressed concern over the development, describing it as the first such industrial action in recent years. The government reiterated its commitment to the welfare, motivation, and productivity of healthcare workers across the state.
To resolve the dispute, a Conciliation Committee comprising representatives from both the Medical Guild and the state government was earlier constituted. The committee has held several meetings, and the documents submitted by the Guild are currently under review in accordance with established policies and fiscal guidelines.
“As a responsible government, we value the critical role our healthcare professionals play in delivering quality and timely health services to over 20 million Lagosians,” the statement read. “We urge the Medical Guild to remain committed to dialogue as we seek a peaceful and just resolution.”
The Ministry specifically appealed to the Medical Guild to suspend the planned strike action, emphasizing that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains fully committed to promoting the welfare of healthcare professionals and maintaining industrial harmony within the health sector.
The government also reassured residents that contingency measures are being put in place to minimize any disruptions to healthcare services during the strike period.
“We thank Lagosians for their patience and understanding as we continue to work towards a fair and lasting resolution,” the statement concluded.
