The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expressed serious concern over a recent revelation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the illegal sale of Nigerians’ personal information, including the National Identification Number (NIN).
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC described the trend as a grave security issue with far-reaching consequences for individuals involved.
The Commission was reacting to the EFCC’s disclosure that a network of young Nigerians has been offering victims between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 in exchange for their personal data, which is then sold to some Fintech companies for up to ₦5,000.
NIMC has distanced itself from any such activity, warning that it will not be held responsible for any personal data willingly shared by individuals for financial gain or inducement.
The Commission reiterated previous warnings to Nigerians not to disclose their NIN or related personal details to unauthorized individuals or organizations. It also emphasized that service providers must verify any NIN presented before granting access to services.
As part of measures to enhance the security and control of personal identity data, the NIMC urged the public to download the NINAuth App, available on both the Apple iOS App Store and Google Play Store. The app offers features that allow users to manage and protect their NIN information effectively.
Dr. Adegoke concluded by encouraging Nigerians to remain vigilant and responsible with their personal information to avoid falling victim to fraud.
