2027: Peter Obi May Rejoin PDP as Party Zons Presidential Ticket to South|LAGOS EYE NEWS

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who contested under the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has stirred political speculation following his recent alliance with the opposition coalition that includes the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Despite joining the coalition three weeks ago, Obi maintains that he has not formally left the Labour Party, reaffirming his loyalty to the platform under which he contested and galvanized youth support through the now-popular “Obidient Movement.”

Obi came third in the 2023 presidential race, trailing behind Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and eventual winner President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His campaign ignited a wave of enthusiasm among Nigerian youths, positioning the Obidient Movement as a major force during the elections.

Meanwhile, the PDP continues to grapple with internal leadership crises that have plagued the party since its 2002 presidential primaries, where Atiku emerged as the flagbearer.

The party has faced criticism for failing to uphold its zoning agreement a principle designed to rotate power between the North and South. This failure, particularly evident in the last election cycle where the presidency was not zoned to the South despite the National Chairman being from the North, has fueled discord within the party.

In a bid to restore unity and strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections, the PDP has initiated reconciliation efforts.

A committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki has been engaging disaffected members in ongoing talks aimed at resolving grievances and rebuilding party cohesion.
