The 2025 edition of the globally renowned Osun Osogbo Festival has officially begun with the vibrant celebration of Iwopopo Day, a traditional rite led by the Ataoja of Osogbo, His Royal Majesty Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji Larooye II.
With the successful observance of Iwopopo, the ancient town of Osogbo has commenced its series of cultural and spiritual activities dedicated to the worship of the Osun goddess.
The festival, which holds deep religious and cultural significance for the Yoruba people, has been recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
Iwopopo, a historic town cleansing ritual, marks the spiritual beginning of the Osun Osogbo celebrations. The event attracted a large gathering of traditional stakeholders, including high-ranking chiefs, community leaders, and members of the Ataoja-in-Council, all of whom paid homage to the Ataoja.
Speaking at the event, the Osun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Bankole Ojo Abiodun, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
He congratulated the people of Osogbo for hosting yet another edition of the prestigious festival and commended their unwavering dedication to tradition.
Hon. Bankole praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for his administration’s steadfast support of culture and tourism, describing it as a key pillar of state development.
He further called on Osun residents to continue supporting the governor’s vision and leadership, urging collective efforts toward securing his re-election for a second term.
The Osun Osogbo Festival continues in the days ahead with more traditional rites, processions, and cultural showcases expected to draw thousands of devotees, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from around the world.
