Staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, following unresolved disputes with the university management.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), announced the industrial action in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.
Dated July 31, 2025, the notice was jointly signed by the chairmen and secretaries of the unions. A copy of the letter was obtained by our correspondent on Friday.
The unions directed all staff of LASU and its affiliate campuses — Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe Campus — to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.
According to the statement, the strike will remain in force until all demands of the staff members are addressed by the university authorities or other relevant stakeholders.
The union leaders emphasized that the decision to embark on the strike was reached during an emergency congress of the Joint Action Committee held earlier in the week.
They cited long-standing issues affecting welfare and working conditions of staff, which they claim have been neglected despite repeated dialogues with the university management.
While the specific demands were not detailed in the announcement, union sources hinted at concerns over unpaid entitlements, poor infrastructure, and alleged breaches of previous agreements.
The timing of the strike has raised concerns as LASU students were scheduled to begin their 2024/2025 second semester examinations on Monday, August 4, a plan now threatened by the industrial action.
