The Edo State Government has announced an indefinite ban on the activities of several transport unions and organizations across the state over allegations of illegal revenue collection, harassment, and extortion.
The ban was contained in a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq. The government expressed deep concern over the resurgence of illegal activities by certain unions and groups allegedly operating under various disguises.
Among the affected groups are the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), ANNEWAT, and Drivers on Wheel. The operations of Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, a private consultant formerly contracted to enforce revenue compliance, were also suspended.
According to the statement, while some of the affected groups were previously granted limited authorization to work with the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) under clearly defined terms, they have allegedly “grossly violated” the conditions of their engagement.
The violations reportedly include unauthorized cash collections, extortion, and acts of intimidation against motorists, drivers, traders, and other members of the public.
“The Government considers these actions as acts of economic sabotage, social oppression, and a direct affront to law and order. The era of using unions as fronts to harass, intimidate, or extort drivers and road users in the name of revenue collection is over,” the statement emphasized.
The government directed that no individual or group affiliated with the banned unions or organizations is allowed to collect dues, levies, taxes, or any form of payment from motorists or road users. “Members of the public, including drivers and traders, are strongly advised not to make any such illegal payments to the affected groups.
The government further warned that anyone found contravening the directive would face the full weight of the law.
