A Russian national suspected of supporting the extremist militia organization Islamic State has been charged for allegedly planning a terrorist attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin.
The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against the man, who was arrested at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in February while on his way to boarding.
According to police, he was set to travel to Pakistan to undergo military training for Islamic State.
“From the beginning of February 2025, he initially planned to commit an attack in Germany, for example on the Israeli embassy in Berlin,” said the statement from the federal prosecutors.
To this end, the accused had obtained instructions on how to make explosives on the internet, but he was unable to obtain the necessary components.
He is also said to have translated propaganda material for Islamic State into Russian and Chechen.
To finance the trip to Pakistan, he took out two mobile phone contracts for expensive smartphones, which he sold at a profit, the Karlsruhe-based office said.
“Shortly before the start of the journey, he sent a video to a suspected Islamic States member abroad swearing allegiance to the organization.”
The State Security Senate of the Court of Appeal in Berlin must decide whether to admit the charges. It would then also set dates for a trial.
The charges include supporting and attempting to join a foreign terrorist organization as an adolescent and preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.
