The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) branch, on Monday joined its counterparts across the country in a peaceful protest over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to honour agreements reached with the union.
The protest, which followed a congress held on the university campus, was led by the branch chairman, Dr. Ola Oyedele. He said the demonstration became necessary due to government’s continued silence on ASUU’s long-standing demands.
Dr. Oyedele accused the government of failing to implement the 2009 agreement as well as refusing to pay three and a half months of outstanding salaries owed to university lecturers.
“We are not interested in the Federal Government’s TISSF loan scheme; what we want is a fair and sustainable salary structure,” he stated.
Other lecturers who spoke during the protest lamented the lack of improvement in the university system.
They expressed concern that if the issues remain unresolved, ASUU may be left with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike.
