Amnesty International has condemned the demolition of shops and shelters at Alaba Rago Market in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, describing the action as unlawful and a violation of human rights.
The demolition, which reportedly affected hundreds of traders and residents, was carried out barely a month into a six-month quit notice issued to occupants. Amnesty International criticized the move, saying it demonstrated “deliberate contempt for the rule of law and due process.”
Eyewitnesses said the exercise left hundreds of families homeless and destroyed the livelihoods of thousands who had operated in the market for decades.
The process was reportedly violent, with some residents sustaining injuries. Traders who attempted to salvage their belongings were allegedly dispersed with tear gas.
“For many residents of Alaba Rago, the market represents not just a place of trade but also home, work, and survival,” Amnesty International stated.
The rights group stressed that international law prohibits forced evictions and the deliberate destruction of property, insisting that those behind the incident must be held accountable.
Amnesty International further called on Lagos State authorities to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the demolition and to provide adequate housing and compensation to victims.
