A senior government official in Equatorial Guinea has been handed an eight-year prison sentence in connection with a major corruption scandal that also thrust him into the spotlight through leaked sex tapes.
Baltasar Ebang Engonga, widely known as “Bello,” was convicted by a Bioko provincial court for embezzling public funds through falsified travel claims, according to Hilario Mitogo, press director of the country’s Supreme Court.
Engonga, a married former head of the national financial investigation agency, gained notoriety in November when explicit videos showing him with the wives of other officials circulated online. Some of the recordings were allegedly filmed inside his office at the Ministry of Finance.
The leaks triggered a storm of ridicule across social media, spawning parody songs, comic skits, and even a reference in Nigerian music star Burna Boy’s hit track Tatata.
Engonga was sentenced alongside five other senior officials, who were also implicated in the scandal. In addition to his prison term, he was ordered to pay a fine of $220,000.
