Osun at 34: ‘Our Founders’ Sacrifices Not in Vain’ – Governor Adeleke |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Osun State on Tuesday commemorated the 34th anniversary of its creation with a call for reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the dreams of its founding fathers.

In a statewide broadcast, Governor of Osun State expressed immense joy and gratitude, describing the day as a significant milestone in the history of the state. He recalled that on August 27, 1991, Osun was carved out of the old Oyo State after years of sustained advocacy, sacrifice, and agitation by visionary leaders.

“The creation of Osun was the result of unwavering commitment and sacrifice by those who believed that our unique cultural heritage, resources, and potential deserved recognition and development,” the Governor said.

Tracing the history of the agitation, he noted that the struggle for the state’s creation dated back to the 1950s, when series of commissions of inquiry were set up in the old Oyo State. According to him, the success eventually recorded in 1991 was a fulfillment of the hopes and aspirations of the people.

He paid tribute to the agitators, community leaders, traditional rulers, and political actors who championed the cause of statehood, stressing that their unity and determination remain the foundation upon which Osun stands today.

“Today, we remember and honor those who championed the creation of Osun State. Their labor was not in vain; they fought tirelessly, not for themselves, but for the future generation yet unborn,” he added.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to continue honoring the heroes of the struggle, recalling that some of them were recognized last year as part of government’s promise to preserve their legacies.

Highlighting Osun’s achievements in the past 34 years, he said the state has made progress in education, culture, sports, innovation, and enterprise. He also cited investments in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and governance, while acknowledging that challenges remain.

“Though the journey has not been without challenges, the spirit of resilience that birthed Osun still lives in all of us,” he declared.

Osun State, known for its rich cultural heritage, was created on August 27, 1991, and has since become a symbol of unity, resilience, and aspiration for its people.
