Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted the emotional strain of his role, confessing that “sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years,” as pressure mounts following the club’s poor start to the season.
United have failed to win any of their opening three matches, with Wednesday’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town adding to the growing concerns at Old Trafford.
After the shock defeat, Amorim hinted at unrest within the squad, saying his players “spoke really loud” and that “something has to change,” comments that quickly sparked speculation over his future.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, Amorim admitted his emotions sometimes get the better of him.
“Sometimes I love to be with my players. Sometimes I don’t want to be with my players. I need to improve on that. It is going to be hard,” he said.
The Portuguese coach, who dismissed suggestions that United’s penalty shootout defeat was down to a goalkeeping issue, stressed that he will not alter his open approach with the media.
“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players – this is my way of doing things. I know experienced people tell me to be more calm, but I am not going to be like that. I am going to be who I am – that’s why I have the passion I have,” Amorim added.
Reports on Friday suggested United’s hierarchy are considering holding talks with Amorim during the September international break, amid fears he could walk away. But the 39-year-old dismissed the speculation:
“I always have conversations with them. I am just focused on this game against Burnley. I need to live this day by day. I am going to be like that all the time, so prepare yourselves.”
Transfer Updates: Mainoo and Højlund
Amorim also addressed ongoing transfer speculation. Rising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has informed the club he wants a loan move, but Amorim insists he has no intention of letting him go.
“I want Kobbie to stay and he needs to fight for his place. We need Kobbie – that is not going to change. The players not playing will be disappointed, but everyone will have opportunities.”
Meanwhile, striker Rasmus Højlund is reportedly close to securing a loan move to Serie A side Napoli. Asked about the deal, Amorim said:
“Until it is official, I cannot say much.”
United face Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off), still searching for their first win of the campaign.
