Record 40% of workers in Germany in part-time employment |LAGOS EYE NEWS

A record number of employees in Germany are working part-time, a study revealed on Tuesday.

The figure reached 40.1% in the second quarter of the year, according to the Institute for Employment Research.

The number of part-time employees rose by 1.3% to 16.971 million compared to the same quarter of 2024, while the number of full-time employees fell by 0.7% to 25.352 million.

While part-time work was an exception in the 1990s, it has now become standard, said IAB expert Enzo Weber.

Part-time employees work an average of 18.62 hours per week, which is also a record, the Nuremberg-based agency said.

According to the IAB, the number of people in employment across the country rose slightly year-on-year to 46 million in the second quarter.

However, employment levels stagnated compared to the first quarter when adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects.
