The Federal Government has released the full list of subjects under the newly introduced school curriculum for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, set to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
The development was brought to public attention on Wednesday after the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, shared details via his X handle.
In the post, Olusegun displayed an image though unsigned and unmarked that outlined the subjects to be offered at both levels.
“The new curriculum for Nigerian schools which will commence from the next session in September 2025 has been released,” he wrote.
Unveiled by the Federal Government on Sunday, the curriculum marks a major shift in Nigeria’s secondary education system. It introduces compulsory digital literacy and basic entrepreneurship at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level, while programming, artificial intelligence (AI), and additional language options feature prominently at the Senior Secondary School (SSS) stage.
Junior Secondary School (JSS 1–3)
Mathematics & Measurement: Fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra, statistics, geometry, and measurement.
English Language: Essay writing, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, debates, and drama.
Integrated Science: Physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, technology, and lab safety.
Digital Literacy & Coding: Microsoft Office tools, internet research, coding (Python, Scratch), and basic robotics.
Social Studies: History, geography, civics, economy, entrepreneurship basics, and global issues.
Languages: Mother tongue and foreign language (French/Arabic).
Creative Arts: Visual arts, drama, theatre, film basics, and music.
Physical & Health Education: Sports, nutrition, reproductive health, first aid, and drug abuse awareness.
Senior Secondary School (SS 1–3)
Mathematics & Advanced Applications: Algebra, trigonometry, calculus basics, statistics, and financial mathematics.
English & Communication: Academic writing, literary analysis, world literature, research, public speaking, journalism, and fact-checking.
Sciences: Advanced physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science.
Technology & Innovation: Programming (Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS), data science, AI & robotics, cybersecurity, and digital entrepreneurship.
Social Sciences: Government, law, economics, history, philosophy, ethics, and entrepreneurship.
Languages: Mother tongue literature and foreign languages (French, Arabic, Chinese optional).
Creative Arts & Innovation: Fine arts, drama, music, and media production.
Physical & Health Education: Advanced sports, mental health, first aid, CPR, and leadership.
Research & Project Work: Data collection, analysis, project presentation, and defense.
Education stakeholders have described the revised curriculum as a step towards aligning Nigeria’s secondary school system with global standards, while also preparing learners for a technology-driven future.
