The Lagos State Government has stepped up enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics, with officials seizing items from supermarkets across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a video posted on his official X.com account on Wednesday.
The footage showed enforcement officers confiscating plastic cups and products with attached straws from one of the outlets.
Wahab said the enforcement team visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki, among other locations, as part of ongoing efforts to curb plastic pollution in the state.
“Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single-use plastics. This action is part of our wider efforts to ensure compliance with the state’s directive on phasing out SUP, which poses serious environmental risks and worsens flooding across Lagos,” he said.
He added that the team also visited Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, as well as Lastprize and Reno Supermarkets on Liasu Road, Idimu.
Wahab stressed that the government would continue to monitor compliance, enforce regulations, and engage businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives that safeguard the environment.
