Bayer Leverkusen has parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag after just two Bundesliga matches, a decision that has stunned the football world.
In an official statement released shortly after his dismissal, the Dutch manager described the move as “a big surprise,” stressing that such an early termination was “absolutely unprecedented.”
Ten Hag pointed to the summer departure of several key players as a major factor in the club’s current transition, insisting that rebuilding a squad is a process that “requires both time and trust.”
“A new manager deserves the space to implement his vision, set standards, shape the squad, and leave his mark on the style of play,” he said. “I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed, which I deeply regret.”
The former Ajax and Manchester United boss also expressed disappointment in what he felt was a lack of mutual confidence between himself and the Leverkusen hierarchy.
“Throughout my career, every season I have been able to see through to the end as a coach has brought success. Clubs that placed their trust in me have been rewarded with silverware,” he added.
Ten Hag, however, ended his statement on a positive note, thanking the Leverkusen supporters for their passion and wishing the squad and staff “every success for the remainder of the season.”
