An Ibadan-based journalist, Ojo Peter, has been confirmed dead after being shot by suspected armed robbers along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of the city.
The incident, which occurred on August 18, 2025, was initially believed to be health-related until his younger brother, Enahoro Peter, clarified that the journalist was attacked over a cross bag he carried.
Eyewitnesses said Ojo pleaded with the assailants, shouting that the bag contained no money, but was nonetheless shot in the back before being dispossessed.
Ojo, a former reporter with Parrot Extra who later worked with the Daily Monitor, was widely mourned following the announcement of his death on September 7 by the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Enahoro recounted that the family was contacted by police officers from the Orita Challenge Division after the attack. “This is someone who left home in perfect health, only to be gunned down while trying to make ends meet,” he lamented. He added that his brother’s damaged phone, recovered at the scene, was used by police to trace the family.
Following the incident, police investigations reportedly led to the arrest of one suspect, while another was said to have died during a confrontation with operatives.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, said two suspects linked to a string of robberies in Ibadan were intercepted with a motorcycle around Imalefalafia. According to him, one of the suspects attempted to resist arrest and sustained fatal injuries, while the other was taken into custody.
Osifeso further disclosed that the gang was also connected to another robbery and shooting incident at Anfani Junction on the same day. He assured that investigations were ongoing and promised that further updates would be communicated as the case progressed.
