Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has stressed that personal ambition is not enough to shape anyone’s political trajectory, noting that the ultimate decision rests with party leadership and collective agreement.

Obasa made this assertion on Thursday while featuring on a live television programme, ‘Beyond The Headlines’, where he also described his working relationship with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as cordial and driven by a shared commitment to the progress of Lagos State.

“He’s my brother, my colleague, my partner in progress. We’ve been together for a long time. Some people see us as a legacy, and we’re still doing it. He has been very active, working hard, serving the people,” the Speaker said of Governor Sanwo-Olu.

When asked about the possibility of retiring from politics or contesting for governorship in the future, Obasa explained that though he is not stepping away from politics, he remains conscious of life beyond public service.

“No. What next? Life. I’ve just said, you know, there’s life ahead. So let’s contemplate living that life,” he remarked.

The Speaker, however, emphasized that in politics, individual aspirations must align with party structures and leadership decisions.

“When we talk about politics, you have to be a member of a political party. And as a member, you must believe in the leadership of that party. At some point, you cannot determine what’s next for you on your own. Of course, you may aspire to become something, but you still have to respect the party and how it is managed.

“The party leaders will eventually sit down and decide who goes next. So, whether as a Speaker, Deputy Governor, Governor, or Senator, it’s all about consultation and engagement with party leaders. As an individual, you must align with the process,” Obasa explained.
