The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has summoned Israel’s deputy head of mission, David Ohad Horsandi, to deliver a formal rebuke following Israel’s attack that targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar.
In a statement on Thursday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, strongly condemned what she described as a “blatant and cowardly Israeli attack” against Qatar.
She also denounced “hostile statements” made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Any aggression against a GCC member state constitutes an attack on the collective Gulf security framework,” the minister stressed.
The diplomatic fallout has prompted a wave of regional solidarity with Qatar. Leaders from across the Middle East including the President of the UAE have travelled to Doha to express support in the aftermath of the strike.
The development marks a sharp strain in relations between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, which only four years ago signed the Abraham Accords, making the UAE the first Gulf state to normalise ties with Israel.
