The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially launched drone operations as part of efforts to improve traffic management, strengthen security surveillance, and enhance public safety across the state.
The initiative, unveiled in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, marks a significant shift from traditional traffic monitoring methods to digital intelligence-driven operations.
Speaking on the development, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deployment as a “watershed moment” in the agency’s operations.
He explained that the drones, equipped with high-definition cameras and real-time monitoring capabilities, will enable the Authority to respond more swiftly to traffic congestion, accidents, and other emergencies.
“This transition transcends the mere acquisition of equipment; it embodies a strategic reformation that positions LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance in traffic management,” Bakare-Oki said.
“The drones will provide real-time aerial oversight, enabling swifter interventions, improved safety outcomes, enhanced emergency coordination, stronger security frameworks, and the promotion of a more disciplined motoring culture.”
He further assured the public that drone operations would be carried out in strict compliance with privacy safeguards, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements to maintain transparency and public trust.
According to him, the deployment represents another milestone in Lagos’ drive toward sustainable urban mobility and safety, while reinforcing the state government’s commitment to innovation and smarter city management.
Bakare-Oki also noted that the drones would complement LASTMA’s emergency response efforts and existing toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
With this move, LASTMA aims to cut travel times, reduce road mishaps, and safeguard lives and property, while advancing Lagos’ ambition of becoming a safer, smarter, and more habitable city.
