Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation, has condemned the killing of a dispatch rider by a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), describing the act as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman and heartbreaking.”
A disturbing video, which surfaced on Thursday, September 18, 2025, sparked outrage after it showed an NURTW member, Shamsideen Adio, and his associates assaulting a dispatch rider to death.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tapa Street, Lagos Island. In the footage, the victim was seen losing consciousness during the attack, yet Adio allegedly continued the assault despite efforts by bystanders to revive the rider.
Reacting to the development on Saturday, Hon. Adedeji urged the police to ensure Adio and his accomplices are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, stressing that the case must serve as a deterrent to others who disregard the sanctity of human life.
“The NURTW should be a professional body and must not condone lawless members who treat fellow human beings as less than equals,” he said, adding that the dispatch rider’s death underscores the risks faced daily by ordinary citizens striving to earn a living.
While commending the Lagos State Police Command for swiftly arresting the main suspect, the lawmaker called on the leadership of the Lagos NURTW, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to immediately suspend Adio and cooperate fully with investigators.
Adedeji also stressed the need for continuous education and enlightenment of union members to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all individuals involved in the assault will be brought to justice.
