A fatal road accident occurred on Monday along the Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora Seven-Up, when a 40-foot container-laden truck overturned and crushed a commercial tricycle, killing two passengers on the spot.
The ill-fated truck, an Apple-branded articulated vehicle with registration number XP 368 AKD, reportedly lost control while attempting to maneuver under the Ijora Bridge.
The truck toppled and crashed directly onto the tricycle with registration number KJA 364 QN, instantly killing two passengers — one of them a serving police officer.
Emergency officials confirmed that the remains of the police officer were conveyed to a morgue in Yaba, while relatives of the second victim, a female passenger, rushed to the scene to retrieve her body.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working with other emergency responders, rescued two other victims alive, including the tricycle operator. Both sustained serious leg fractures and were quickly transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to a hospital in Ijora for urgent medical treatment.
To prevent chaos, police operatives from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Divisions were deployed to the scene. Their presence was said to have calmed an angry mob that attempted to set the truck ablaze and ensured the safety of rescue workers.
Authorities have since cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow, while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
